1969 Dodge Charger Pro Touring

The 1969 model year brought few modifications. Exterior changes included a new grille with a center divider and new longitudinal taillights both designed by Harvey J. Winn. A new trim line called the Special Edition (SE) was added.

This could be available by itself or packaged with the R/T, thus making an R/T-SE. The SE added leather inserts to the front seats only, chrome rocker moldings, a wood grain steering wheel and wood grain inserts on the instrument panel.

A sunroof was added to the option list as well, and saw only 260 sold installations. The bumble bee stripes returned as well, but were changed slightly. Instead of four stripes it now featured one huge stripe framed by two smaller stripes. In the middle of the stripe an R/T cutout was placed. If the stripe was deleted, a metal R/T emblem was placed where the R/T cutout was. Total production was around 89,199 units.

Standard engine for 1969 was the 318 cubic inch V-8 producing 230 horsepower (gross). The standard six cylinder was the 225 cubic inch, 145 horsepower (gross) slant six. Two optional 383s were offered with either a two or four barrel carburetor set up producing 290 and 330 horsepower respectively. In the Charger R/T, which accounted for 21 percent of 1968 Charger sales, the 440 C.I.D. Magnum, 375 H.P. power plant was standard and the 426 C.I.D., 425 H.P. Hemi was optional.

A high rate rallye type suspension, including sway bar, was standard. The R/T and 500 models had special handling suspension package which inclined heavy duty torsion bars, heavy duty shocks, extra heavy duty rear springs and sway bar. The long list of options included automatic speed control, front disc brakes, tachometer, rear window defogger, AM, AM/FM, and A M/Stereo Tape radios.

Bo & Luke Duke popularized the 1969 Dodge Charger in The Dukes of Hazzard
The television series The Dukes of Hazzard (1979–1985) featured a 1969 Dodge Charger that was named The General Lee. "The General" sported the Confederate battle flag painted on the roof and the words "GENERAL LEE" over each door.

The windows were always open, as the doors were welded shut. The number "01" is painted on both doors. Also, when the horn button was pressed, it played the first 12 notes from the de facto Confederate States anthem "Dixie". The car performed spectacular jumps in almost every episode, and the show's popularity produced a surge of interest in the car. The show itself purchased hundreds of Chargers for stunts, as they generally destroyed at least one car per episode. Scale models replaced real cars for filming jumps at the end of the show's sixth season.

1966 Dodge Charger

"When MT first heard that Dodge would introduce a fastback baseon on the Coronet, we were understandably apprehesive of seeing another hastily styled car, cobbled together just ofr a free ride on Detroit's current stylewagon. Our fears were allayed a full year ago by the Charger II, a one-of-a-kind show car obviouslyy built to measure public opinion. Enthusiastic reaction at four major shows as well as private samplings from, of all people, 400 mainline Philadelphians clearly indicated that all Dodge had to do was put on practical bumpers and start production.

"We roadtested the first production Charger and in eyeing it from every angle, nowhere could we find eveidence of that compromise so evident in some other recently introduced fastbacks. The interior is fully as esthetically pleasing as the exterior.

"If the price (which should hover at $3500) is right, we don't see how Dodge can miss with this car."
